General FAQ

What is LazSoc?
Short answer: We are your student society/student government here at Lazaridis. As a Laurier student in the Lazaridis faculty, you are both a member of Students' Union and LazSoc automatically.

Long answer: The Lazaridis Students’ Society (LazSoc) is a student-led organization comprised of all 6,000 undergraduate Lazaridis Business & Economics students at Wilfrid Laurier University. The Lazaridis Students’ Society acts as a link between students, faculty, and members of the surrounding business and economics community.

Each semester, the Lazaridis Student’s Society offers resources, programs, and unique events tailored to broaden students’ professional and personal development. The Lazaridis Students’ Society supports the initiatives and programming of the 25+ Lazaridis business and economics clubs and associations, who are committed to the development of key student interests.

The Lazaridis Students’ Society is dedicated to representing the interests of all undergraduate Lazaridis Business & Economics students. We strive to support and enhance the student experience and provide opportunities for students to discover and pursue their passions.

The Lazaridis Students’ Society is funded through the SBE Faculty Fee (SBE Levy) and sponsorships from corporate partners. The fee, which is paid by all Lazaridis SBE students each semester, has been in effect since 1995, and has continued to be our main source of funding. The Fee has helped grow the Lazaridis Students’ Society into a multi-purpose organization: representing the Lazaridis student body, funding and facilitating clubs, and providing engaging events and programs. The organization does not make any profit off of these funds – we are solely working to improve the student experience at the Lazaridis School of Business & Economics.
What is a 'BU Course'?
All core business courses at Lazaridis are coded as BU followed by the year allocation (eg 1, 2, 3, 4), then the course number.

For example, BU111 or BU354.
Who is BBA Advising?
All faculties have advising offices that act as the means of facilitating course changes, over-rides and petitions. They act similarly to a guidance counsellor you might have had in high school, but instead serve specific faculties. So, BBA advising supports all undergraduate Lazaridis students, including incoming ones.

What is a minor, option or concentration?
Every Lazaridis student will have the ability to declare one major throughout the course of their degree. A minor, option or concentration is a specialization of knowledge in an area of business that correlates to the interest and career aspirations of each student.

You cannot add an additional major to your degree unless otherwise already allocated.

If you need help deciding what minor, option or concentration you're interested in, how to register, contact BBA advising.

Options: Students in the BBA or Double Degree BBA programs can't choose the 'Management Option', however, BA students can (e.g. BA in Economics with Management Option). On option requires 4.0 credits (8 courses) for the Legal Option, and the Co-op Option has different requirements based on Laurier's cooperative education requirements.

Minors:
Popular in the BBA program is the Economics Minor, however, there are lots of different minors that can be added to your degree regardless of which major you're in. Different minors have different requirements, but generally, you need 3.0 credits (6 courses) for a minor to be added to your transcript. For more details, click here.

Concentrations: Are completed during your third, fourth or fifth year of university (senior students) and focus on BU courses in the Lazaridis faculty that can be added to your degree. Similar to minors, there are a lot of options available and you need to complete 2.0 credits (4 courses) for a concentration to be added to your transcript. For more details, click here.
